Reassurance from Health Experts Amid COVID-19 Concerns

(Reported By Pallavi Jha)

Amid rising discussions about COVID-19 across the nation, Dr. Sanjay Rai, a professor at AIIMS Delhi and the lead researcher of Covaxin, has provided reassurance, stating that there is no cause for alarm. He explained that the recent fatalities reported are not solely due to the coronavirus; rather, those individuals had pre-existing severe health conditions alongside the infection.

As a member of the COVID Guidelines Committee, Dr. Rai emphasized that ongoing research in India has been conducted over the past three years regarding the current variant. He noted that the uptick in cases should not incite fear, as the virus is now acting similarly to seasonal influenza.

He commended the preparedness of both central and state governments, asserting that they are in a much stronger position to handle any challenges while keeping a close watch on the infection rates.

On the topic of virus mutations, Dr. Rai remarked that such changes are a normal occurrence. The World Health Organization currently classifies this variant as a 'Variant of Interest.' He added, 'Even if it escalates to a 'Variant of Concern,' there is no need for panic.'

Dr. Rai's comments come at a time when social media is filled with anxiety and misinformation regarding COVID-19 cases. Experts advise the public to remain cautious, steer clear of rumors, and make informed decisions.
